Certificate of School Business Management
CSBM is the entry-level qualification for the school business management role in the maintained sector. The current programme is delivered by Best Practice Network and is mapped to the DfE national standards for school business professionals. Most learners complete the programme in about nine months.
Cost
The published 2025/26 cohort fee starts at £1,500 plus VAT per learner for the school-funded route. There is no apprenticeship-funded version of CSBM; the cost is borne by the school or by the learner.[1]
Length
The programme runs over approximately nine months with online learning, regional or virtual study days and a workplace project. It is designed to be sat alongside a full-time SBM-track role.[1]
Syllabus
The CSBM syllabus maps to the entry-level expectations of the DfE national standards. It covers finance, procurement, HR basics, ICT, estates, administration and an introduction to leadership. Assessment is by written assignments and a workplace project.[2]
Recognition
CSBM remains the recognised entry-level qualification in the maintained sector and is widely accepted in the independent sector as evidence of the entry-level competency framework. Some independent schools prefer the ISBA Diploma at progression stage.[3]
