Career change to school bursar
The single most common route into a UK bursar post is a career change in mid-to-late career from accountancy, the armed forces, the NHS, or a charity finance background. Schools value the breadth those backgrounds bring; bursars value the school calendar and the institutional purpose of the role.
Accountants (ACA, ACCA, CIMA)
A qualified accountant moving into a bursar role normally takes the ISBA Diploma in School Business Management or DSBM as a top-up qualification rather than CSBM, which would be below their entry level. Many ISBA member schools explicitly welcome ACA, ACCA and CIMA backgrounds for the senior bursar post.[1]
Ex-military
Ex-military finance officers route in through the Career Transition Partnership and through ISBA's recruitment network. The independent boarding sector has a long-standing affinity with this route, particularly for the senior bursar post.[2]
NHS finance managers
NHS finance managers transfer well into the maintained-school SBM and academy CFO routes. CSBM is a useful orientation programme even for senior NHS finance staff because the language and frameworks of school finance are quite different from NHS finance.[3]
Choosing a top-up qualification
The most credible top-up is whichever qualification fits the sector being entered. ISBA Diploma for the independent sector; DSBM for the maintained sector and academies. Career changers should normally complete the chosen route within the first 18 months in post.
